How DPI and Print Resolution Calculations Work
Understanding image resolution mathematics eliminates blurry prints, rejected Etsy uploads, and unexpected framing cropping. There are three core variables in digital printing:
- Pixel Count (px): The digital dimensions of your image (e.g. 3000 × 2000 pixels).
- Print Dimension (in / cm): The actual physical size of the paper or canvas (e.g. 10 × 6.67 inches).
- Resolution (DPI / PPI): The density of pixels printed per inch of physical paper.
Calculate DPI
DPI = Pixels ÷ Inches
Used when you have a photo and want to know what print quality it produces at a given size.
Calculate Print Size
Inches = Pixels ÷ DPI
Used when you want to know how big your image can be printed without dropping below 300 DPI.
Calculate Pixels Needed
Pixels = Inches × DPI
Used when you have a target frame (e.g. 24×36") and need to know the required camera resolution.
The Viewing Distance Rule
A common misconception is that every printed medium must be 300 DPI. In reality, the required resolution depends entirely on the distance between the viewer's eyes and the physical print:
