How DPI and Print Resolution Calculations Work

Understanding image resolution mathematics eliminates blurry prints, rejected Etsy uploads, and unexpected framing cropping. There are three core variables in digital printing:

  • Pixel Count (px): The digital dimensions of your image (e.g. 3000 × 2000 pixels).
  • Print Dimension (in / cm): The actual physical size of the paper or canvas (e.g. 10 × 6.67 inches).
  • Resolution (DPI / PPI): The density of pixels printed per inch of physical paper.

How do I calculate DPI from an image's pixel dimensions and print size?
To calculate DPI, divide the image's pixel width by the desired physical print width in inches: DPI = Pixels ÷ Inches. For example, if your photo is 2400 pixels wide and you want to print it 8 inches wide: 2400 ÷ 8 = 300 DPI.
How many pixels do I need for a 300 DPI 8×10 print?
For an 8×10 inch print at 300 DPI, you multiply each dimension by 300: 8 × 300 = 2400 pixels wide, and 10 × 300 = 3000 pixels high. Therefore, your image should be at least 2400 × 3000 pixels (7.2 Megapixels).
What resolution is an A4 page at 300 DPI?
Standard A4 paper measures 210 × 297 millimeters (8.27 × 11.69 inches). At 300 DPI, an A4 page requires exactly 2480 × 3508 pixels for crisp, print-shop quality.
Why can billboards use 20–50 DPI while photos need 300 DPI?
Because of viewing distance! Your eyes cannot distinguish tiny details from far away. While a handheld photo viewed at 12 inches requires 300 dots per inch, a highway billboard viewed from 50 feet away looks completely smooth and sharp at only 20 to 50 DPI.
